England & Scotland by Train
16 Days
United Kingdom
Tour Overview
t’s easy and convenient to see Britain by rail – the world’s oldest railway network still works like a charm, and connects together some amazingly historic cities. Go clockwise from London, ending up round at York, taking in a mixture of cities and countryside on the way – and tailor your route to your requirements. It’s an environmentally-friendly way to soak up the environment!
Your route whisks you from London to Bath. After a day enjoying the town’s unspoilt Georgian good looks, you’ll head through the Cotswolds to the famous university city of Oxford. Continue up the west of England to Roman-built Chester and the gorgeous shores of the Lake District, staying above a charming family-run restaurant in Ullswater, before crossing into Scotland.
In Scotland, the landscape gets even bigger – the West Highland Line takes you from Glasgow into the Highlands, where mountains soar up from the tracks into marvellous peaks. After a stay in a family-run hotel, you’ll take the most famous of the Scottish Lines – the Jacobite Steam Train – across the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Once you reach Mallaig – the little port at the very end of the line, take a ferry over to the Isle of Skye for a private tour.
No trip back is complete without a stop in Scotland’s capital – elegant Edinburgh, and you’ll finish your tour in York, a medieval masterpiece of a city in northern England.

Spend a day out and about in Oxford
Compact and largely flat, Oxford is best experienced on foot. Many of the city’s most celebrated universities and colleges, the Bodleian Library and Radcliffe Camera, are within 15 minutes walk of your accommodation, the Castle and Covered Market within 20. Fans of the Harry Potter films will find much over which to pore, with several most famous locations easily spotted as you stroll
An undoubted holiday highlight awaits today: after breakfast, take the short train journey to Fort William in time to meet the world-famous Jacobite steam train, known better to some as the Hogwarts Express from the Harry Potter motion pictures. You’ll love the trip from Fort William to Mallaig, traversing the majestic Glenfinnan Viaduct, at whose visitor centre the train stops so you can stretch your legs and admire the views. Stirring stuff!
Upon arrival at Mallaig, it’s a two minute walk to reach the ferry terminal, where you board the ferry for a short crossing to Armadale on the Isle of Skye. Here, you’ll be met by private transfer and taken on a whistle-stop tour of the highlights of what is arguably Scotland’s most picturesque island, before heading back across the superb Skye Bridge to Kyle of Lochalsh and onwards to Plockton.
