Itinerary
Sitting astride the Ljubljanica River, Ljubljana is marked with picturesque bridges and a marketplace, designed by the famous architect Jože Plečnik. Spend the first day wandering through Ljubljana Old Town, take in the views from Dragon Bridge, and walk around Tivoli Park.
Kamnik is a medieval town with two castles, a monastery and a colourful street lined with artisan workshops. The town is inextricably linked with the Velika Planina plateau and its shepherding tradition. The fairy-tale plateau with one of the largest shepherd’s settlements in Europe attracts visitors to learn about the interesting life on mountain pastures and try dairy delicacies prepared by the shepherds. Enjoy a stroll in the meadows, a longer hike along the plateau or a mountain biking tour.
Return back to Ljubljana in the evening.
Go up to Ljubljana Castle and enjoy the endless views. It only takes three minutes by cable car or twenty minutes on foot to reach the castle. Explore Ljubljana’s numerous galleries and museums or join some of the most interesting tours.
Depart to Bled early afternoon. Dinner at Bled and walk at the lake.
In the morning take traditional boat called pletna to see the island and the church, which has a bell that plays a special ode to love. In the afternoon visit Vintgar Gorge and walk along the tourist path with narrow passages, wooden bridges, and galleries, constructed on the rocks in 1893. The gorge also features two manmade attractions: an arched stone railway bridge from 1906 and a dam.
Nestled in a valley between the Julian Alps and surrounded by pristine alpine landscapes of lush woods and green meadows, Bohinj is Slovenia’s largest glacial lake. You can explore the lake’s waters and shores and visit nearby attractions such as the Savica waterfall.
Return to Bled in the evening.
A trip to Kranjska Gora takes you to an area that represents a border point between Austria, Italy, and Slovenia. Relax in the heart of the Julien Alps and then explore the activities along Lake Jasna, and visit Zelenci for some unforgettable nature reserve sights.
Vršič Pass is a high mountain pass that runs through the heart of the Julian Alps. The road was built 1,611 m (5,285 ft) above sea level. Watch for Ajdovska Deklica, a naturally carved face of a maiden in a rock. Have a cup of coffee and traditional lunch at the top of the pass and then decent to Soca Valley. Soča River with its stunning emerald green color is considered to be one of the most beautiful and best preserved Alpine rivers in Europe.
Arrive to Tolmin.
At the picturesque confluence of two rivers, Tolmin offers quick access to a range of exciting activities. Nearby, you can visit Tolmin Gorges and Triglav National Park. Trails meander through the gorge, while the surrounding area also boats interesting churches, war memorials, and much more. Relax in the afternoon at some of the area’s thermal spas, ideal for resting and rejuvenating those travel-weary muscles.
Ride on a double-track railway through the underground tunnels of Postojna Cave and see colorful rock formations, as well as the 100 species that make the caves their home. One of the largest caves in the extensive karst plateau features 21 km (13 mi) of passages, galleries, and chambers illuminated by electric lighting. A historical train takes you to large halls adorned with chandelier-like stalactites and limestone “sculptures,” such as “the brilliant,” a shiny white limestone formation. Meet the olm, a salamander popularly called the dragon’s offspring or the human fish.
Return to Ljubljana if departure is from Ljubljana’s airport. Alternatively, departures can be from Venice (Italy) or Zagreb (Croatia).
