Itinerary
Papuk NP, Kutjevo & Djakovo: Our adventure begins as we embark on the discovery of Papuk Nature Park, trekking some of its gorgeous forest trails. We continue the journey by introducing ourselves to the most widespread wine variety of Croatia: Graševina. You may have encountered a genetically identical variety – Welschriesling – but in Croatia, this varietal makes for an entirely different – and arguably the best – wine. Next is the town of Djakovo, where we can admire its majestic cathedral as well as the famous Lipizzaner stud farm. Our day ends in a picturesque rural accommodation in Baranja, our home for the next three nights.
Exploring Baranja: Welcome to Baranja (Baranya) county, literally translated as “mother of wine”, this is a multiethnic gastronomic paradise between the Danube and Drava rivers. Baranja is home to some of the best meat as well as (river) fish dishes Croatia has to offer, and vineyards have been planted here since the time of the Roman emperors. We’ll discover Baranya by embarking on an all-day excursion, driving by vineyards as well as imposing historical sights. We’ll delve into the region’s traditional hearty cuisine, with an inescapable visit to Zmajevac – the wine capital of Baranja.
Vukovar & Ilok: We’ll start our morning with a visit to the Vucedol Culture Museum, listening to the story behind one of Europe’s most important archaeological sites. Backtracking a few miles to the town of Vukovar, another history looms, this time more recent. Once a thriving port and a jewel of baroque architecture in Eastern Croatia, Vukovar experienced total devastation in the Homeland War of the 1990s and became a symbol of resilience. We’ll continue our journey following the Danube to reach the small town of Ilok – home to some of the best wines this region has to offer, excelling in Traminac (Gewürztraminer) that has been grown here since the beginning of the 18th century.
Kopacki rit Nature Park: On our last day we’ll explore Kopacki Rit Nature Park – an intrinsic mosaic of lakes, canals, ponds, floodplain forests, reed beds and wet meadows. We’ll learn about its flora and fauna as we embark on a boat ride through the Special Zoological Reserve. After another delicious lunch, we’ll return Zagreb, where our tour sadly comes to an end.
